DOUBLE PORTRAIT CENDO - LANZA

Organization: Festival Musica

This double portrait of the Italian composer Mauro Lanza and the French composer Raphaël Cendo was compiled by curator Arne Deforce.  As a dedicated performer of contemporary cello repertoire, Arne Deforce has built an international career on works by the likes of Iannis Xenakis, Helmut Lachenmann and Richard Barrett, among others.  For many years he has been one of the mainstays of Champ d'Action, not only as a musician but also as a thinker and curator of projects such as this Cendo / Lanza portrait.  For this programme, he made is debuts as conductor on the Festival ARS MUSICA in 2008 and the project will be reprised at the renowned 'Festival Musica' in strasbourg.

The music of the French composer Raphaël Cendo (1975) has certainly provided of the most challenging and overwhelming experiences recently to be had in the concert halls of France.  The oeuvre of this young iconoclast is remiciscent of the sound masses of Iannis Xenakis or the deformed, spectral sonority of Fausto Romitelli, but the complex tonal structures of Free-Jazz and the distortion and noise culture of certain types of rock music also come to mind.  The programme features two monumental compositions by Cendo: the concerto 'Action Directe (2007) for bass clarinet solo and an ensemble of 13 musicians as well as the work composed three years earlier 'Action Painting' (2004) for 15 musicians.  Following her breathtaking interpretation, Sabine Uytterhoeven will perform again in Strasbourg.
