TRANSIT 2006

CREATIONS OF FLEMISH COMPOSERS BY CHAMP D’ACTION AND THE COLLECTIVE TRANSIT,

the New Music Festival of the Flemish Brabant Flanders Festival in Louvain, is exclusively focused on music of the 21st century. It reveals the diversity of the contemporary musical idiom and has become a creation festival for all that. During the opening concert of Transit 2006 the Champ d’Action ensembles along with the Collective will create 4 works by Flemish composers. The concert concludes with Feuillage du Coeur by the composer Serge Verstockt.

Stefan Prins

In his new work Ventriloquium Stefan Prins wanted to take yet another step(after his former piece Memory Space 2) in exploring both the frontiers between ‘improvising’ and ‘executing’, and the possible means of communication between both. To this end he makes use of a hybrid ensemble consisting of ‘classical’ as well as ‘improvisation’ musicians, combined with live electronics as a link between the two. To what extent does ‘improvising’ equal ‘executing’? What’s the part in this process of ‘culture’ both as individual and collective memory? How does the individual relate to the collective and how does technology change this relationship? Is there such a phenomenon as an ‘individual’, anyway, or does everyone just speak the words and structures as dictated by an overlying ‘culture’, like a ventriloquist’s puppet? These are some of the questions asked by Stefan Prins.

Serge Verstockt

Feuillage du Coeur (Foliage of the Heart, 1995) was Serge Verstockt’s first vocal composition. In the commission order for this work, written for the soprano Rolande Van der Paal, two clarinet players and ensemble, there was specified that the composition had to refer to a 19th-century work. Verstockt managed to circumvent this exhortation – which was neo-romantic and in the most reactionary meaning of the word ‘post-modern’ – by referring to a work of Schönberg, the perfect symbol of new music. Even so, from Herzgewächse Verstockt just kept the coloratura soprano and Maeterlinck’s (untranslated) poem. Concurrently with the poeticsonorous- musical qualities, the poem’s contents were a very strong source of inspiration.
