In the context of the exhibition 'Textiles', the MuHka has invited Champ d'Action to create a musical project that relates to the subject matter of the exhibition: 'Art and Social Fabric'. The exhibition presents an overview of 20th and 21st century artists who work with textiles as a medium and exploit its potential to communicate social messages. The historical and economic significance that fabric can have for a region is examined.
Just like 'textiles', music is often based on an invisible grid onto which the sound is woven. This is certainly the case for 'Crippled Symmetry' by Morton Feldman, in which the deviations from this grid, crippled symmetry, become the subject for the composition. Choreographer Marc Vanrunxt will create a new solo to accompany this performance with dancer Etienne Guillauteau.
Feldman expressed his fascination with fabric as follows: 'What struck me about these fragments of colored cloth was how they conveyed an essential atmosphere of their civilization... For me the analogue would be one of the instrumental imagery of Western Music'. (1986)
The early works of Philip Glass by contrast, render this grid audible through prologned identical repetitions and a constant pulsation. His friendship with the minimalist artists Richard Serra and Sol Lewitt surely had a major influence on his work.
