HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUC BREWAEYS

In 2009 the Flemish composer Luc Brewaeys turns 50.  The perfect opportunity for Champ d'Action to devote an entire programme to Brewaeys.  The programme promises both ensemble pieces that Luc has composed in the past for Champ d'Action and a new piece for cello and electronics that will be created at the birthday concert by Arne Deforce.  His piece for solo trumpet 'Si sentiva un po' stanco' will also be included.  Alain De Rudder created this piece in 2005 at a concert by Champ d'Action after it had languished for years on the shelf, judged 'unperformable' by the trumpeter for whom it was originally wirtten.  The solo trumpet piece can only be performed at AMUZ.  At the two other concerts (in Brussels and in Ghent), it will be replaced by the piece for solo accordion 'Il Fiume del Tempo Passava...', written and performed by accordionist Ludo Mariën.  Finally, for this programme, Champ d'Action will invite guest duo Jan Van Hoecke (Recorder) and Pieter Dhoore (Piano) to perform the composition 'Les Méandres de la Mémoire'.

Twenty years ago, Luc Brewaeys had a hand in creating Champ d'Action.  In the 1990's, Champ d'Action also recorded a number of his works: in this way, works such as 'OBAN' and 'Talisker' were published on the label Megadisc.

In 2006, Luc composed 'Painted Pyramids', a work for ensemble and electronics commissioned by Champ d'Action.  The first part of this wirk was created at the time at deSingel.  On the occasion of this birthday concert, 'Painted Pyramids' will be performed for the first time its entirety.

The première of the concert at AMUZ will be fully recorded by Klara and will be published in the spring of 2010 on the label Et'cetera.  The CD will be available in select stores, via the Champ d'Action website and before and after concerts by Champ d'Action.  Performances of the project are also planned at the Handelsbeurs in Ghent and at the Brussels Conservatory (Bozar).

Through this birthday concert and the CD, Champ d'Action wishes to pay tribute to the man who is one of its most important founding fathers as well as one of the greatest composers Belgium has produced.  Happy Birthday Luc!!!
