A choreography of Marc Vanrunxt to music of Morton Feldman

Already before, Marc Vanrunxt (Kunst/werk; Art/work) has used the slow, condensed music of the American composer Morton Feldman, who fascinates with balancing extreme simplicity and complexity. After the successful collaboration between Champ d’Action and Marc Vanrunxt
around Last Pieces, both of them again take up the challenge to work with Feldman’s music. In this production the concept of ‘time’ is central. Time and space ‘an
sich’, but not in the least empty or bare: dynamics, difference and transformation manage to concretise the two dimensions. The piece Patterns in a Chromatic Field (80’) for cello and piano is juxtaposed to Crippled Symmetry (90’) for flute, piano and percussion. In these compositions the frontiers of music are being explored: not the pain threshold of what is bearable musically,
but the prosaic frontiers concerning performance, theatre, hard labour. In fact playing pianissimo for hours, the way Feldman liked it so much, is far more difficult than hammering
fortissimo. Around the musicians the cloud of sound, light, images, movement crystallises, the ephemeral dance of the elements, stardust – the home of Morton Feldman’s late quartets.
In addition to his regular scenographer Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Vanrunxt has also invited the visual artist Kristof Van Gestel. Between them the two installation artists enter into a
dialogue that involves the music, the dancers and the public as well.
