HALLUCINATION CITY

Glenn Branca

A symphony for 100 electric guitars by Glenn Branca

HALLUCINATION CITY is a composition by the American cult figure Glenn Branca. This gigantic piece for 100 guitars was premiered in New York in 2001 to overwhelming public acclaim.
It was performed in open air, in the shadow of the World Trade Center. Kyle Gann in his review of this performance for The Village Noise: “Structurally, it was perhaps Branca’s most impressive work ever, filling out 62 minutes with no movement breaks. It started out purely consonant, repeating simple rising motives. Starting at a deafening level, the work got louder
almost throughout, and – after a stasis of a few minutes that could have signaled an ending – suddenly burst into tensely rising chromatic scales.”
Champ d’Action intends to bring this piece in several European cities in collaboration with local organisers and authorities. Arrangements have been made for the European premiere at
the Festival of Flanders – Ghent, with two performances on the same night in Arts Centre “Vooruit”. The following day there will be a performance in the framework of the Happy New Ears Festival in the City Theatre at Kortrijk (Courtrai).
The project will be prepared in close co-operation with Glenn Branca himself. Through mail he will be directly in touch with the applicant guitarists, and the whole preparatory phase for
the first rehearsal will be organised through Internet. Branca, his conductor John Myers and
drummer Virgil Moorefield will all be present at rehearsals and concerts in Ghent and Kortrijk.
